Reunion of Confederate Veterans - Sensational Murder Case - Death of a Prominent Citizen - Personals. [...] Mr. A.S. Holleman, one of the County's estimable citizens, of the Mill Swamp neighborhood, died at eleven o'clock this morning. Mr. Holleman was in the 68th year of his age. His wife proceeded him to the grave a little more than a year ago. No children survive them. One child was born to Mr. and Mrs. Holleman many years ago but died in its infancy. Mr. Holleman came of one of the most prominent families of this County, being a son of Mr. Wilson Holleman, a grandson of Mr. Josiah Holleman and a nephew of Mr. Joel Holleman, who represented his district in Congress and was considered one of the most brilliant men in this part of the state in his time. Mr. Holleman leaves one sister, who is the only member of the family now living, Mrs. William H. Cofer, of Smithfield, Virginia. The nearest relatives, with the exception of Mrs. Cofer, are Mrs. Cofer's two daughters, Misses Annie and Mittie, her two sons, Messrs. Chas. W. and Edward H. Cofer, all of Smithfield, and Mrs. Livius Lankford, wife of Dr. Lankford, of Norfolk, and Mrs. Taylor, the wife of the Rev. Dr. Taylor, of the Baptist church of Petersburg. In the death of Mr. Holleman we feel that Isle of Wight has lost a citizen whose exemplary life is worthy of emulation. Algernon Sidney HOLLEMAN, farmer, Confederate veteran, b. 4 Aug 1838, Isle of Wight Co., d. 22 May 1906, interred in the HOLLEMAN family cemetery*, 5499 Mill Swamp Rd., "Tidewater News" (Franklin, VA), Vol. 1, No. 31, Fri., May 25, 1906, p. 1 *Additional information: Isle of Wight County Historical Society {IWCHS} Grave Site Survey Task Force {GSSTF} report #89: http://www.iwchs.com/Cemetery-Reports.html A photo of her gravestone - added by Shannon Zaichenko - is posted with Find a Grave Memorial #134848389, which includes some notes "from old courthouse records" on him and his family, also posted with the GSSTF report - the phraseology suggests the original source was Hardesty. His parents, Wilson & Ann (NICHOLSON) HOLLEMAN, his wife Martha Bell (JONES) HOLLEMAN (1838 - 1904) & their daughter Annie (1880 - 1884) are also buried there. He enlisted as a private in Co. A, 41st VA Infantry, and was promoted to Second Lieutenant. He was wounded 15 May 1864 at Spotsylvania C.H., and was captured in the hospital after the fall of Richmond, 3 Apr 1865.
