Edward Sidney Holleman, of Zuni, Va., died at his home Sunday morning March 13. He had been ill for some time, and passed peacefully away following a paralytic stroke. He was laid to rest in the family burying ground at Antioch. The service was held in the church, and the officiating ministers were the Rev. W.R. Buhler, the Rev. V.L. Fisher and the Rev. Gordon Price. Mrs. India C. Herrin, sang, "Sleep on Beloved’" by the request of his family. The funeral service was in charge of the Blackwater Masonic lodge of which he was past master. The active pallbearers were Paul Clayton, Arthur Clayton, Roy Raney, W.J. Joyner, Ocie Bradshaw, Rob Crumpler, Lennard Eley and Charlie Joyner; honorary, W.C. Andrews, Leon Lewis, Paul Joyner, W.T. Stewart, Tom Carr, H.C. Duke, Linwood Edwards, Ben Eley, T.H. Birdsong and Jim Clayton. Mr. Holleman was born August 15, 1864*, and departed this life on March 13, 1932 at the age of 68. He leaves a wife and two daughters, Helen and Julia, and four grandchildren. He came from an honorable family of pioneers who settled in Isle of Wight county, with records showing them to have been landowners dating back over a hundred years. In his youth he attended the Windsor M. & F. Academy, where in 1880 he showed marked ability in composition and declamation, receiving a medal for an oration on the subject, "The South faithful to her duty." He married Cora Mae Outland of Woodland, N.C., in 1890, and followed general contracting as a vocation in Isle of Wight county, providing well for his family and establishing himself as a dependable citizen. Mr. Holleman was a faithful and valuable member of the Masonic fraternal order, becoming a Master Mason in 1916. He was a past master in the Blackwater lodge and his brother members have assembled to do honor to his name and achievements. His earthly life was characterized by deeds of charity, and just relations to his fellowmen. He was not affiliated with any church organization, yet he had a firm belief in God's providential dealings in the lives of His creatures, and a deep respect for the holy scriptures. He had a deep-rooted conviction that all good deeds would be rewarded in the future life. His philosophy of life was based rnainly on two scripture verses, 1 Corinthians 13:13, and James 1:27, where love expressed in practical deeds of mercy and kindness is emphasized. He had a sincere appreciation for the beauties of nature, and a great love of all outdoor life.
