LAM HARCUM Franklin lost a good citizen in the tragic death of J. Lam Harcum who died in Raiford Hospital Sunday night from injuries sustained in an automobile accident last Friday night. The crash came about through a collision between a car driven by Mr. Harcum and a truck driven by W.H. Drewry of Sedley on the Franklin-Suffolk highway near the Cross-Roads Service Station. Mrs. Drewry, who was riding with her husband, sustained slight injuries, Mr. Drewry and their 11 year old son who was with them escaping unscathed. Mr. Harcum sustained severe injuries in the head and chest and was brought at once to the local hospital where no hope could be entertained for him on account of the serious nature of his hurts. He was actively interested in the H.H. Motor Company, a recently organized automobile concern of Franklin. James Lemuel Harcum or "Lam" Harcum, as he was popularly known, was 67 years of age, a native of Isle of Wight County where he had spent all of his life until he moved to Franklin about three years ago. He was active in church and community affairs in his home neighborhood and had been a useful member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church for many years, being the oldest member of its board of deacons in point of service, and for several years the superintendent of its Sunday school. A sterling and loyal Democrat, he had served as a member of the Isle of Wight County Democratic Executive Committee for many years, and was Deputy Sheriff in his county for 18 years. He served in the Spanish-American War, volunteering in 1898 and going to Cuba with the Franklin Company "I" of the Fourth Virginia Regiment. He joined the Vaughan-Causey Camp of Spanish-American War Veterans on its formation in Suffolk and was one of the most faithful members of that organization. Few things aside from his church and family meant more to him than his membership in and enjoyment of the famous deer hunt club, now known as the Camp P.D. Hunt Club, and he was rarely absent from its congenial gathering during the hunting season. Naturally a friendly man, and one who numbered a host of friendly men, and one who numbered a host of friends, he found unusual pleasure in hunting, in fish muddles, which are so popular throughout this section of Virginia, and was considered one of the most adept makers of this Tidewater Virginia dish anywhere to be found. It was characteristic of "Lam" Harcum and the many warm friends he had made that a beautiful tribute was written of him by Guy C. Picot of Como and accompanied a wreath of flowers sent by members of his hunt club to be placed upon his casket. Mr. Harcum was the son of the late James Harcum of Isle of Wight, who was a native of England*, and of Mrs. Eadie Harcum. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mamie Daughtrey Harcum; two daughters, Mrs. E.O. Stein and Miss Edith Harcum of Newport News; five sons, C.L. Harcum of Newport News, J.T. and J.G. Harcum of Salem, N.J., T.G. Harcum of Franklin and Philip D. Harcum of Sanford, N.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Cherry Bland of Walters and Mrs. Mary Councill of Franklin and 12 grandchildren. Funeral services were held from Beaver Dam Church Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by his Pastor, Rev. W.B. Denson, assisted by Rev. R.D. Stephenson of Franklin and Rev. C.J.D. Parker of Danville, and burial was made in the church cemetery in the presence of a large assemblage of friends. The active pallbearers were: R.C. Branch, W.O.Bristow, W.H. Chapman, P.R. Camp, J. Clinton Bradshaw, Guy C. Picot, Joseph Johnson and J. Edwards Moyler. Members of the Vaughan-Causey Camp Spanish-American War Veterans and of the Camp P.D. Hunt Club acted as honorary bearers.
