All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Edward Harrell Killed When Hit By Auto Saturday Edward Harrell, 66, died at the Lakeview Hospital in Suffolk Saturday night at 10 o'clock of injuries received four hours earlier when he was struck by an automobile in front of Quincy Gilliam's store and Service Station, five miles South of Smithfield on the Smithfield-Suffolk Highway. Mr. Harrell, well known farmer, lived directly across the road from Mr. Gilliam's Filling Station. Mr. Harrell had bought groceries from Mr. Gilliam and had started home. A Pepsi-Cola truck was parked in front of the Filling Station and as Mr. Harrell stepped from behind the truck to cross the road he was struck by an automobile, said to have been driven by Bill Rawls of Suffolk. The injured man was taken in the ambulance of Roberts & Johnson to the Lakeview Hospital. The tragic accident was investigated by State Trooper W.G. Strange. Mr. Rawles made bond for an appearance on a charge of involuntary manslaughter. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 3:30 at Bethlehem Christian Church with the Rev. R.E. Brittle and the Rev. Arnold Slater officiating. Burial was in the Church Cemetery. Surviving Mr. Harrell are four sons, Clarence, Ralph, Paul, and Edward Harrell, all of Smithfield; five daughters, Mrs. S.L. Johnson, of Suffolk; Mrs. Catherine Luke, of Norfolk; Mrs. Nancy Oliver, Misses Marian and Mary Virginia Harrell, of Smithfield, and one brother, Willis Harrell, of Suffolk.
