JONES, 73, LOCAL MORTICIAN, BURIED AUGUST 4 Jesse Lee Jones, director of the Jones Funeral Home, Smithfield, died unexpectedly Sunday night in the office of the funeral home. He was 73 years old. Mr. Jones was found slumped over his desk in the office of the funeral home Sunday night, August 2, 1959, about 10 p.m. by Johnnie Callaway, an employee, who happened to stop by. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, August 4th at 3 p.m. in the chapel of the funeral home by the Rev. William A. Wright, pastor of the Trinity Methodist Church and the Rev. R.C. Black, pastor of the Isle of Wight charge of Methodist Churches. Burial was in St. Luke's Memorial Cemetery at Benns Church. Mr. Jones was a partner of the Kello-Jones Motor Company in Smithfield until 1928, when he became associated with the Rouse Funeral Company Establishment in Smithfield owned by the Rouse Funeral Company in Newport News. A number of years ago Mr. Jones purchased the business which he operated until his death. He was a member of Bethany Methodist Church and the Wesleymen's Bible Class of Trinity Methodist Church, Smithfield and a member of the Smithfield Lodge No. 269 I.O.O.F. He was the son of the late Bervin Lee Jones and Annie Whitfield Jones of Isle of Wight County and is survived by his wife, Mrs. Kate Edwards Jones of Smithfield; two daughters, Mrs. Jack M. Jones of Smithfield and Dr. Emily E. Jones of Hartford, Connecticut; a son Jesse Eugene Jones of Smithfield; a brother Morris W. Jones of Smithfield; three sisters, Mrs. George Piland, Mrs. Eddie C. Jones, and Mrs. Henry L Berryman, all of Smithfield; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
