All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JOSEPH BROCK JONES JOSEPH BROCK JONES LAID TO REST SUNDAY Funeral services for Joseph Brock Jones, prominent Odd Fellow and former postmaster of Smithfield, whose death occurred on October 20th were held at Smithfield Baptist Church Sunday at 2 o'clock. During the services the choir sang "Does Jesus Care?", "Face to Face", and "No Not There". The officiating ministers were: Rev. L.R. Paulette, pastor of the Smithfield Baptist Church, Rev. N.G. Newman, former pastor of Holy Neck Christian Church and the Rev. A.W.H. Jones of Wakefield. The services were largely attended and the floral tributes were numerous and beautiful. The casket was covered with a pall of roses and lilies. The grave services were conducted by the IOOF Smithfield No. 269, East End No. 244, Newport News, Silver Link, No. 92, Newport News and Grebel Lodge No. 144, Old Point. Members of the IOOF, Red Men and Baraca Class, served as honorary pallbearers and the Berean Class of which he as a teacher, attended in a body. Among the many floral tributes was a spray of evergreens "a symbol of Immortality" contributed by Mr. and Mrs. G.W.K. Fulgham, the oldest residents of Smithfield. Among other floral offerings were, designs from the Pagan Pines Community, Battery Park Community, Baraca Class of Smithfield Baptist Church, IOOF 269, Improved Order of Red Men, Post Office force, Newsoms High School faculty, TEL Class, Berean Class, and the Lelia Minton Brock Missionary Society of the Baptist Church, Friendship Class of Orcutt Ave. Baptist Church of Newport News, and Independent Market. In addition to his wife Mrs. Florence Barham Jones, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Katie Atkinson, of Elm City, N.C.; a son, Ralph R. Jones of Newport News; four daughters, Mrs. H.W. Williams of Norfolk; Mrs. Elvin Loomer, Mrs. R.E. Sawyer and Miss Jeanette Jones of Smithfield and six grandchildren, Billy, Elizabeth and Raymond Jones and Frances and Nancy Williams and Elvin Cofer Loomer. The services at the grave were in charge of the Odd Fellows. Burial was in Battery Park near Smithfield.
