JOHNSON REBURIED FEB. 24TH AT ARLINGTON 1st Lieutenant Donald Milby Johnson, U.S.M.C. was reburied at the Arlington National Cemetery on Thursday, February 24th 1949, at 2 p.m. The deceased was killed in action on Okinawa Island on the 3rd day of April 1945, according to notice sent by the War Department to his wife, Mrs. Harriett Brown Johnson, of Suffolk, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.P. Brown. Lt. Johnson was a native of Smithfield, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Johnson of Smithfield. He was a graduate of Smithfield High School and the College of William and Mary, and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in January 1942 and was sent to the Pacific theatre of war April 1944. He participated in the battle of Bloody Nose Ridge on Pelelieu Island. Besides his parents and his wife he is survived by a son, Donald M. Johnson Jr. of Suffolk; a sister Mrs. Kathryn J. Roeder of Smithfield; his grandmother, Mrs. Saran Beane, and several aunts, Miss Nettie Beane, Miss Jane Johnson and Mrs. R.E. Clay of Smithfield; Mrs. M.E. Holland of Newport News, and one uncle, W. Taylor Johnson of Newport News. Among those from Smithfield attending the reburial service of 1st Lt. Donald Milby Johnson in Arlington National Cemetery February 24th were Rev. and Mrs. R.E. Cardwell, Mr. and Mrs. Lacy Brayshaw, J.T. Robbins, Sr., Travers Edwards, Billy Saunders, Othello Batten, R.E. Clay, Miss Claire Clay, Bobby Clay, Miss Jane Johnson, Miss Nettie Beane, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Roeder. 1st Lieutenant Donald Milby JOHNSON, U.S.M.C., b. 24 Oct 1919, Smithfield, KIA 3 Apr 1945, Okinawa, re-interred in Arlington National Cemetery (Section 34, Site 2353*), 24 Feb 1949, "The Smithfield (VA) Times," Vol. 31, No. 39, Mar. 2, 1949 A photo of his gravestone is posted with his Find a Grave Memorial (#57485369). His birth-year is obscurred by a tree root. His parents, Herbert M. & Ella E. (BEANE) JOHNSON, are buried in St. Luke's Memorial Park, Benns Church.
