JOSEPH SHERMAN JOHNSON SR. 

   WALTERS - Joseph Sherman Johnson Sr., 92, retired owner and operator of 
Walter's Service Station, died Oct. 6, in a Smithfield nursing home.

   Mr. Johnson, a native of Isle of Wight County, was the oldest member of 
Mount Carmel Congregational Christian Church.  He was an Army veteran of 
World War I, and was a member of Windsor Ruritan Club.

   Survivors include his wife, Mary Jenkins Johnson; a daughter, Charlotte J. 
Trueheard of Midlothian; a son, Joseph S. Johnson Jr. of Newport News; two 
sisters, Margaret J. Payne of Rye Brook, N.Y., and Martha Allison of 
Charlotte, N.C.; a brother, the Rev. Hugh H. Johnson of Rocky Mount; four 
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

   A graveside service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Mount Carmel 
Church Cemetery by the Revs. Robert Bennett and Donald Trump.

   Purviance Funeral Home of Smithfield, is handling arrangements.  The family 
will assemble in the church after the funeral.

   Memorial donations may be made to Mount Carmel Church Memorial Fund, 
Walters, Va. 23481, or to a favorite charity.
