Edwin C. Thornton Jr. Burial was in the church cemetery. The body was taken from W.J.M. Holland & Sons Funeral Home to the church one hour prior to the services. Pallbearers were Thomas Garrett, Luther Barnhill, Edgar Barnhill, Felton Johnson, Raymond Johnson, Leigh Johnson, Claudie Hedgepeth and Bob Robertson. Johnson, 86, well known retired farmer of Nansemond County, died Thursday night at Southampton Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was a native of Isle of Wight County, husband, of Mrs. Bertie [sic; Birdie] Mae Edwards Johnson and son of the late James Washington and Margaret Ann West Johnson of Isle of Wight County. He was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church and the Men’s Bible Class. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Jesse E. Johnson, Ahoskie, N.C.; Elliott L. Johnson and Walter H. Johnson, Carrsville, and five grandchildren.
