Timothy Johnson died Saturday, July 16, at the home of his brother, George W. Johnson of Carrsville, in the 83rd year of his life. He was an honorable and esteemed citizen and a loyal Confederate soldier, serving throughout the War Between the States in A.P. Hill’s Corps, Mahone’s Brigade, Company "K", 61st* Virginia Infantry. The greater part of his life had been spent in farming at his former home in the South Quay community where his body was laid to rest by the side of departed loved ones. Mr. Johnson was a faithful and consistent member of Franklin Baptist Church and held his membership in Urquhart-Gillette and Beaver Dam camps of Confederate Veterans. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Geo. H. Steinhardt of Franklin and a brother, Geo. W.* Johnson, with whom he made his home. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock by his Pastor, Rev. R.D. Stephenson, and internment following in the family burying ground. The body bearers were Harry Steinhardt, G.E. Johnson, S.V. Butler, J.P. Butler, Emmett Saunders, R.L. Johnson, Leland P. Simmons, and Frank Johnson. The honorary pallbearers were: Joe Bynum Gay, J.F. Duke, Dr. C.J. Bradshaw, W.H. Lankford, Tup Jones, J.R. Bracy, and Robert Daughtrey. MANRY gives Timothy JOHNSON, d. 18 Jul 1927, bu. 6 miles S.E. of Franklin; 61st VA Infantry, Co. F, Private; that James JOHNSON d. 6 Oct 1864 at Chimborazo Hospital, and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Richmond. That description would put the cemetery in Nansemond Co. He appears in the 1870 Census in Holy Neck Dist., Nansemond Co., working on his father's farm. He appears in the 1880 Census in Holy Neck Dist., Nansemond Co., as a farmer, married, with 2 children. He appears in the 1900 Census in Holy Neck Dist., Nansemond Co., Owning Mortgaged Farm #112. The regimental history (p. 117) gives 41st VA Infantry, Co. K, brother of Benjamin Franklin & George T. JOHNSON. His brother George W. also served in K/41st, the South Quay Guards. He appears in the (24 Jan) 1920 Census in Windsor District, Isle of Wight Co., Owning Farm #131. He had retired by the 1930 Census and is not on the farm schedule. D.Cert. #8014 gives d. 14 Mar 1936, res. Carrsville 15 yrs, 10 mos, & 14 days [ca. 30 Apr 1920]. George is buried in Beaver Dam Baptist Church Cemetery, near Carrsville.
