JOYNER, SISTER DIE AT SMITHFIELD SMITHFIELD, Jan. 2 - Vincent Witcher Joyner, 58, postmaster of Smithfield, died at noon Sunday of a heart attack, about two hours after his sister, Mrs. Mary Joyner Cox, local clubwoman, was found dead at her home here. Mr. Joyner, who had been postmaster here for some 20 years, died in the post office where he had gone to make a Sunday morning checkup. Mrs. Cox, widow of R. Sidney Cox, was found dead in her bed at her home. She apparently died in her sleep. Mr. Joyner was a member of Smith Union Lodge No. 18, AF&AM, a member of the Improved Order of Red Men and a member of Smithfield Trinity Methodist Church. Mr. Joyner's Survivors Surviving Mr. Joyner are his wife, Mrs. Hilda Batten Joyner, of Smithfield; a daughter, Mrs. James D. Snow, Jr., of Hampton; a sister, Mrs. C.K. Goodrich, of Smithfield; a brother, Page Joyner, of Carrollton; a grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Cox, also a member of Trinity church, was leader of the church's Circle No. 2. She was a member of Chanco Chapter, Daughters of American Colonists; president of Isle of Wight Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and a past-president of the Virginia Division of the UDC. Surviving Mrs. Cox, beside her sister, Mrs. Goodrich, and her other brother, are a daughter, Mrs. Fred Beck, of Petersburg, and a son, R. Sidney Cox, Jr., of Smithfield. A graveside service for Mr. Joyner will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Ivy Hill Cemetery, with Masonic rites. Graveside rites for Mrs. Cox will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Ivy Hill Cemetery. Cox and V.W. Joyner Jr. Die Suddenly Mrs. Mary Joyner Cox, widow of R. Sidney Cox, was found dead in her apartment about 10 A.M. Sun., Jan. 2, 1955. A doctor, called in, said she had died of a stroke some four hours earlier. Mrs. Cox's brother, Vincent Witcher Joyner, 58, Smithfield Postmaster for 20 years, was summoned to the apartment, and later went to the postoffice where he died suddenly before noon from a heart attack. Mrs. R.S. Cox Mrs. Cox, widow of R. Sidney Cox, was president of Isle of Wight Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and past president of the Virginia Division, U.D.C. She was a lifetime member of Trinity Methodist Church, leader of Circle 2, in the church, and was a member of Chancel [sic] Chapter, Daughters of American Colonists. Surviving her are a daughter, Mrs. Fred Beck of Petersburg; and a son, R. Sidney Cox, Jr. of Smithfield; a sister, Mrs. C.K. Goodrich of Smithfield, and a brother, Page Joyner, of Carrollton. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 4 P.M. at the grave in Ivy Hill Cemetery by the Rev. F.G. Oglesby, assisted by the Rev. William Brayshaw. Pallbearers were Lt. Gov. A.E.S. Stephens, Wesley Seward, Cecil Gwaltney, Howard Gwaltney, Henry Sykes, George Mumford, W.P. Warren and Travis Edwards. V.W. Joyner Jr. Mr. Joyner was a member of Smithfield Lodge 18, A.F.&A.M., the I.O.R.M. and of Trinity Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Hilda Batten Joyner; a daughter, Mrs. James D. Snow Jr., of Hampton; a grandson, J.L. Snow III; a sister Mrs. C.K. Goodrich of Smithfield; a brother, Page Joyner, of Carrollton; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, January 4, at 11 A.M. in Ivy Hill Cemetery by the Dr. J.A. Chapman, pastor of Trinity Methodist Church. Masonic services were held at the grave. The funeral procession left the Jones Funeral Home at 10:45 A.M. Pallbearers were J.T. Robbins, Jr., Julius D. Gwaltney, J.C. Callaway, E.D. Turner, F.M. Griffis, and Perry Griffis. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Wesley Bible Class of Smithfield Trinity Methodist Church. Mr. Joyner was one of Smithfield's best known citizens, having been postmaster here since 1934. He was gifted with a quick wit and engaging personality which earned him many friends. He was active in politics but never ran for an elective office. While in the Navy during World War II [sic; I] he became ill and was a semi- invalid for several years. After recovering his health, he went into business and was quite successful. His parents Vincent W. and Belle Edwards Joyner, founders of V.W. Joyner and Company, internationally known packers of Smithfield hams. [ST article included a photo of "V.W.
