Jordan, Prominent Smithfield Man, Succumbs After Short Illness Smithfield, Va., Feb. 22. - J.R. Jordan, a leading citizen of Isle of Wight County, and twice a member of the Virginia General Assembly, died at his home here at 3 o'clock this morning, after a brief illness. He was 63 years old. Mr. Jordan, who long took an active part in Virginia politics, is best known as introducer of the Enabling Act, which submitted the question of prohibition to a popular referendum, and subsequently resulted in passage of the Mapp Act by the General Assembly. Besides his wife, Mr. Jordan is survived by one son, James Jordan; two sisters, Mrs. J.L. Cofer, and Miss Annie Jordan; and one half-brother, Hunter Jordan. All are residents of Smithfield. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 3 o'clock at Smithfield Baptist Church by Rev. Dr. Preston Blake, the pastor, assisted by Rev. W.H. Atwill. Burial will be in Ivy Hill Cemetery here. ****************************************************************************** JORDAN FUNERAL HELD AT SMITHIELD TODAY Suffolk, Feb. 23. - Funeral services for James R. Jordan, of Smithfield, for many years representative from Isle of Wight County in the State Legislature, were held this afternoon at Smithfield Baptist Churoh by Rev. Dr. Preston Blake. The body was interred in Ivy Hill Cemetery. The active pallbearers were C.B. Jones, Willie Holmes Chapman, B.W. Chapman, W.H. Sykes, Trent Chapman, James R. Rowell, Jack Chapman and Dr. W.C. Ames.
