Lewis Dies; Funeral Wednesday James J. Lewis, 92, a retired fireman [sic*], died at 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the home of his son, J.L. Lewis, 1142 Twenty-seventh Street, after an illness of two years duration. Mr. Lewis was a native of Isle of Wight County [sic*], and was born January 14, 1838 [sic*]. He is survived by three daughters - Mrs. Benjamin Johnson, of Windsor; Mrs. Ida Bradshaw, of Portsmouth, and Mrs. F.M. Spivey, of this city; and by two sons - John L. Lewis, of Newport News, and K.R. Lewis of Port Norfolk; Thirteen grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon from Antioch Christian Church in Isle of Wight County. James J. (Southampton Co. M.Reg. 1750-1853, pp. 434, 705) James & Ann Frances TURNER, daughter of Robert & Polly (JOHNSON) TURNER, m. 18 Jan 1859. (Isle of Wight Co. M.Reg. 1859 p. 90 #8) The 1900 Census - Cypress Dist., Nansemond Co., gives b. Jan 1838; m. 41 years, 8 of 10 children surviving; Rented Farm #92. D.Cert. 20282 (Newport News #315) gives Farmer; b. 14 Jan 1838, Windsor; parents unknown to the informant, his son John Lee LEWIS. James applied for a Confederate pension 7 Apr 1910 in Isle of Wight Co., stating that he was 73 on 14 Jan 1910, and had been farming all his life. Comrades Peter Frank CROCKER & John F. RAMSEY gave supporting depositions, stating that they served in the Surry Light Artillery. King's "Historical Notes" gives James with "Others," citing Hardesty (p. 568), not with the Surry Light Artillery (p. 562).
