LATIMER, 69, BURIED SEPT. 7TH AT BENNS CHURCH, VA. Linwood Major Latimer, 69, postmaster and prominent merchant of Carrollton, died September 5, 1954 at the Riverside Hospital in Newport News after a short illness. A native of Nansemond County, he had lived in Isle of Wight County most of his life. He was appointed postmaster of Carrollton in 1935, and also had operated a grocery and general store there for 25 years. Mr. Latimer was a member of the Benns Methodist Church, the Carrollton Ruritan Club, the Order of Red Men and Smithfield Lodge No. 18 A.F.&A.M. He was the son of the late William R. and Catherine Bloxom Latimer. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Vivian Hurst Latimer; three daughters, Miss Frances E. Latimer and Mrs. Anna B. Bailey, of Carrollton, and Mrs. Bruce Porterfield of Goldsboro, N.C.; three sons, Edward H. Latimer of Carrollton; Linwood M. Latimer of Rescue, and R. Russell Latimer of Newport new; a sister, Mrs. Mary L. Pruden of Magnolia, and two brothers, Frank M. Latimer of Smithfield and W. Richard Latimer of Carrollton, and five grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, September 7 at 4 p.m. at Benns Methodist Church, by the Rev. Raymond Carson, pastor, with burial in St. Luke's Memorial Cemetery. The body was taken from the Bullock Funeral Home to the church one hour before services.
