Luter, 67, retired owner of the American Shoe Repair shop here, died yesterday afternoon in a Winchester rest home after a brief illness. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the graveside in Antioch Christian church cemetery. Rev. James Tate, pastor of Wilroy Baptist church, will officiate. The body will lie in state at First Baptist church, of which Mr. Luter was a member, from 12:30 p.m. until time for the procession to Antioch. A native of Southampton county, Mr. Luter operated a shoe repair business in Ivor for several years before moving to Suffolk in 1927. A victim of polio in his youth, he walked with the aid of crutches, and was a familiar figure in downtown Suffolk for 35 years, retiring last year. His shoe shop was on South Main street. His concern for other crippled persons was reflected in his policy of hiring only handicapped help in his business, which was the basis of a feature story in the Suffolk News-Herald several years ago. Mr. Luter's parents were the late Zachary and Katie Ellis Luter of Southampton county. His wife, Mrs. Josephine Johnson Luter, died in 1950. The family home here was at 334 E. Pinner St. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ernie Mae Williams, Winchester; three stepsons, Ralph Johnson of Portsmouth, Edward Johnson of Zuni, and Grover Johnson of Sufolk; four brothers, William Luter of Zuni, Robert C. Luter of Suffolk, David Luter of Richmond, and George Luter, Honolulu, Hawaii, and eight grandchildren. ****************************************************************************** Bennett Luter Services Held Funeral services for Bennett Littleton Luter, who died Wednesday in Winchester, were conducted Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the graveside in Antioch Christian church cemetery by the Rev. James H. Tate, pastor of Wilroy Baptist church and William P. Shipp of the First Baptist church. Pallbearers were Grady Walker, Walter Ward, Marshall Andrews, Byron Cutchin, H.I. Jordan, Maywood Johnson, J. Claud Hines and Julian Kitchen.
