MOUNTJOY FUNERAL HELD FOR BOY OF 12 DROWNED WHILE SWIMMING Funeral services for Ashton L. Mountjoy, 12, of Battery Park, who was drowned Tuesday night, June 14th at 8:00 o'clock while swimming with a group of boys in Jones Creek at Rescue, were held Thursday afternoon, June 17, at 5:30 p.m. in the Battery Park Baptist Church with the Rev. O.J. Hodges, pastor, officiating. Burial was in St. Luke's Memorial Cemetery at Benns Church, Va. The funeral was largely attended and there were over 150 beautiful floral offerings. Active pallbearers were: W.P Minga, C.R. Watkins, O.S. King, Jr., Elmo Bloxom, Ernest Hines and L.H. Spady. The youth, known to his many friends as "Buck" was diving from an oyster boat. After swimming about in the water "Buck" came back to the boat and as he reached up toward the deck the tide sucked him under. His father and others who were watching from the dock were helpless. Efforts of his companions were futile. The body was recovered an hour and a half after the drowning with the use of poles. "Buck" was a student last year of the Smithfield school in the sixth grade. He was promoted and would have returned this fall to the seventh. His teacher was Mrs. Walter Sherin. He is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Ashton D. Mountjoy and one sister, Jane, of Battery Park, and the following grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. D.L. Mountjoy, Carrollton; T.L. Clarke and Mrs. Ruth Bloxom Clarke. Ashton L.
