MARTHA OWNEY DIES IN PORTSMOUTH Mrs. Martha J. Owney, widow of the late John T. Owney, died in the home of her son in Portsmouth, April 24, 1930, aged 81 years. On March 23, 1869 she was married to John T. Owney. To this union were born eight children, seven boys and one girl. The husband, daughter and three sons preceeded her in death. She is survived by four sons, J.M. Owney, of Wakefield, M.B. Owney, of Norfolk, J.B. and S.C. Owney, of Portsmouth. The body was brought to Antioch Christian Church and interment made beside that of her husband where a large crowd of her friends had gathered to pay a tribute of love and respect. The services were conducted by Rev. C.E. Gerringer and Rev. A.K. Lambdin. The pallbearers were: H.L. Harris, H.H. Carroll, L. Altizer, C.A. Laine, J.S. White and J.R. Revell. "Mattie" Martha J. Southampton Co. Her husband (1846 - 1929) was a Confederate veteran, having served as a private in Co. A, 18th Battalion VA Heavy Artillery. Martha applied for a pension for his service 7 Oct 1929 in Sussex Co. It gives John Tyler OWNEY, m. 23 Mar 1869 in Southampton Co. Rather, they m. 15 Mar 1869. (Southampton Co. MB1A:315; M.Reg. p. 30 #44) His D.Cert. gives John Thomas OWNEY; the informant was [son] J.M. OWNEY.
