Former County Girl's Husband Dies In California 

  Mr. Ralph Sharp of Smithfield received a telegram last week informing him of 
the death of a son-in-law, Mr. J.E. Poe, 45, at Vista, California.  Poe was a 
native of North Carolina and has been married to the former Miss Mary Gay 
Sharp of Smithfield for approximately eighteen years.  The couple have five 
children. 


Joseph Erwin GAY, Navy veteran of WW-II, 
b. 26 Mar 1917, Alamance Co., NC, d. 29 Dec 1958, San Diego Co., CA, 
interred in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery*, San Diego, CA, 
"Smithfield (VA) Times," Vol. 40, No. 2, Thurs., Jan. 8, 1959, p. 1 

*Additional information: 

An obituary also appeared in the Escondito, CA "Times-Advocate," Dec. 31, 
   1958, which states he was buried at Point Loma.

   Find a Grave Memorial #3424858. 

His widow 2m. Norris Everett IRVIN; they are buried in Park View Cemetery, 
   New Plymouth, Payette Co., ID. 

Her father Ralph Turpin SHARP, Sr.) is buried in Ivy Hill Cemetery,

His mother, Sarah Christine (McMILLIAN) POE, died two days after Joseph's 
   birth, and was buried in Altamahaw Baptist Church Cemetery, Elon College, 
   Alamance Co., NC. 

His father, Richard Henry POE (1879 - 1940), is buried his third wife (of 4) 
  in Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Sanford, Lee Co., NC. 

Joseph 1m. Gene WHITEHURST, 7 Oct 1940 in Elizabeth City, Pasquotank Co., NC.
