Raymond Powell, 20, To Be Reburied Thurs. *** Pfc. Raymond Powell, 20*, who was killed in action in France during World War II on July 4, 1944, will be reburied Thursday, January 6, 1949 St. Luke's Memorial Cemetery at Benns Church following services at the Bullock Funeral Home near Smithfield at 2 P.M., conducted by the Rev. Victor Anthony 3rd of Benns Methodist Charge. [sic] The deceased is survived by his mother Mrs. Frank Powell of Benns Church; four sisters, Mrs. Mildred D. Moore, Miss Emily Powell, Dorothy Jane Powell, all of Benns Church; Mrs. R.J. Hayes, Suffolk; three brothers, Jack N. Powell, Julius Powell of Benns Church and William J. Powell of Smithfield. Powell attended school at Smithfield and was employed in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard when he entered the service, on August 23, 1943. He received training at Camp Lee for six weeks and then at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma for three months, after which he was transferred to Camp Phillips, Kansas and sailed for England the latter part of Mrch, [sic] 1944, and was killed in the battle of Cherbough, France. Active pallbearers will be Geo. Yeoman, Billy Lowe, Frank D. Latimer, Jr., Harvey Luter, Leonard Cox, Jr., Nelson Moody, Bud Martin and Bud Gill. His parents, Frank L. and Norma M. POWELL, are buried there also.
