Cem. Thomas Powell, 79, died Friday afternoon, November 6, 1956 at his home at Smithfield after a long illness. He was a retired farmer and a native of Isle of Wight County. He was a member of the Smithfield Baptist Church and the Baraca Class of the church. He was the son of Thomas and Mrs. Molly Jordan Powell. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Nellie Crumpler Powell; four daughters, Mrs. L.P. Eisenburg of Newport News, Mr. G.H. Winslow and Mrs. M.B. Carter, both of Norfolk; and Mrs. B.J. Smith of Smithfield; four sons, Morris E. Powell of Baltimore, Md.; Wilbur L. Powell and James P. Powell, both of Smithfield, and Tom Powell of Windsor; one brother, Willie C. Powell of Portsmouth; three sisters, Mrs. Ronnie Byrd of Baltimore; Mrs. Goldie Turner and Mrs. Virgie Hearn, both of Newport News; 28 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. The body was taken from the Bullock Funeral Home to the Smithfield Baptist Church, Sunday at 1:30 P.M. Services were conducted at 2:30 P.M. by the Rev. Warren F. Taylor, pastor. Burial was in St. Luke's Memorial Cemetery, Isle of Wight County.
