W. Pierce Mrs. Caroline Whitehead Pierce, aged 80, widow of George W. Pierce, died at her residence, 115 West 14th street, Norfolk, June 11 [sic; 1], at 10 o'clock. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Annie L. Crumpler and Mrs. J.B. Major, a son of [sic] Robert Leonard Whitehead, all of Norfolk; Mrs. W.E. Thomas, of Rushmere; eight grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Pierce was a native of Isle of Wight County and had been a resident of Norfolk for the last 18 years. His parents actually were Thomas & Rebecca (Stephenson) Pierce, m. 1 Feb 1849, Franklin. Thomas was killed at the Battle of Malvern Hill, 1 Jul 1862. George & Nora's son Raleigh Pierce (1885-1913), a Suffolk merchant, is also buried at Antioch, unmarked.
