All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ HERSHEL PERSONS TRAIN KILLS RURAL CARRIER WHEN HORSE RUNS UPON TRACKS SUFFOLK, SEPT.22 - Hershel Persons, 69, of Windsor, Isle of Wight County, rural mail carrier for several years, was struck and killed by an eastbound Norfolk & Western freight train at Windsor station about 7 o’clock tonight. He was driving a horse, hitched to a cart in which he was seated. The horse ran upon the track directly in front of the train, which struck the cart, demolished it, and carried the wreckage and the body of Mr. Persons nearly a half mile. The man was dead when reached, death being due to a fracture of the skull, back of the left ear. Mr. Persons is survived by his widow, two sons - John Persons, Norfolk, and Burnley Persons, Richmond; one daughter, Miss Eula Persons, and one sister, Mrs. Fayette [sic; Fabius] Johnson, Suffolk. Mr. Persons was soon to have been retired by the Post Office Department, but owing to his activity, on his own request an extension allowing him another two years of service was granted him. He received notice of this extension today.
