ROUSE, 76, A NATIVE OF SMFLD., BURIED RECENTLY Newport News - William Elmore Rouse, 76, retired Newport News businessman long active in community development, died at his home Wednesday, June 20th following a recent heart attack. Mr. Rouse, a native of Smithfield, was the principal shareholder in the Newport News Daily Press, Inc., publishers of the Daily Press and Times- Herald. He owned the first firm to equip itself with motor transportation when the automobile industry was in its infancy and in other ways was a pioneer in this area. In 1926, he was a delegate of the Newport News Rotary Club to an international convention in Brussels. His wife, the former Miss Edna Sue Hudgins of York County, died in 1924. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Raymond B. Bottom of Newport News; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Virginia Joyner of Elizabeth City County, and Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Hutchins of Portsmouth; 3 grandchildren, Barbara, Dorothy, and Raymond E. Bottom, Jr. Mr. Rouse operated the Rouse Funeral Home in Smithfield up until several months ago when he sold it to Jesse L. Jones because of ill health.
