All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Lafayette Rawls Dies in County Lafayette Rawls, 78, prominent farmer of Nansemond County, near Holland, died early this morning at a local hospital after a short illness. He is survived by his widow. Mrs. Annie Ashburn Rawls; three sons, Emmit L. Rawls, of Holland, and James A. and Peter E. Rawls, of Richmond; five grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Mason Jones, of Nansemond County, and several nieces and nenhews. Rawls was a member of the Board of Trustees and a Senior Deacon in the Beaver Dam Baptist Church and vice-president of the Bank of Holland. The body was taken to the Hill Funeral Home and at 1:30 o'clock tomorrow will be carried to the Beaver Dam Church to lie in state until 3 o'clock, at which time services will be held. Rev. M.C. Clifton will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. ****************************************************************************** Rites Held For Lafayette Rawls Last rites for Lafayette Rawls, of Holland, who died early Saturday morning after a short illness, were held at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the Beaver Dam Baptist Church, with Rev. M.C. Clifton and Rev. H.L. Foster officiating. The church choir, accompanied by Miss Mary Eley, sang, "Abide With Me." Mrs. Vernon Holland rendered a solo, "Sunrise." The casket was covered with a pall of lillies, white carnations and iris. Pallbearers were Felton C. Rawls, W.W. Darden, Lawrence Jones, W.M. Jones, W.B. Ashburn, Jr., Thomas Ashburn, J.P. Dalton and J.D. Rawls. Honorary pallbearers were the directors of the Farmer's Bank of Holland and members of the Men's Bible Class of Beaver Dam Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.
