All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ SUSAN ANN NORFLEET RAWLS Mrs. Susan Ann Rawls, widow of the late Dr. Gavin Rawls of Carrsville, died Monday night, September 17, at the home of her son, Dr. Julian L. Rawls, in Norfolk in her 77th year. Mrs. Rawls had been in ill health for several years while her condition had been critical for several weeks. Mrs. Rawls was the daughter of the late Alex W. Norfleet and Mrs. Indiana Edwards Norfleet, citizens prominent and highly esteemed in the early history of Franklin. She was educated at Chowan College, Murfreesboro, and in 1877 was married to Dr. Gavin Rawls of Carrsville, making her home there until the death of Dr. Rawls in 1922, and since his death living with her children in Norfolk and Baltimore. Dr. Gavin Rawls was Supt. of Schools for Isle of Wight County for many years, and one of the county’s leading and most useful citizens. In their handsome country home at Carrsville Dr. and Mrs. Rawls reared an interesting family of children; were leaders in their church and community life, and numbered a wide circle of friends, many of whom had enjoyed the gracious hospitality of their home. Mrs. Rawls was with her husband, a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church for a long period of years, active and zealous in the work of the church, its Sunday school and affiliated organizations. Mrs. Rawls is survived by four children: Dr. Julian L. Rawls of Norfolk, Mrs. W.A. Biggs of Baltimore, Dr. Edward W. Rawls of Portsmouth and Mrs. Richard S. Dodson, Jr., of Teanack, N.J.; by three sisters, Mrs. A.L. Gardner and Mrs. Jno. C. Parker of this town and Mrs. J.D. Harte of Huntsville, Ala.; by two brothers, Herbert L. Norfleet of Havana, Cuba, and Dr. R.G. Norfleet of Norfolk, by four grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. A third brother, Dr. Julian Norfleet of Norfolk, died in 1925. Funeral rites were conducted from Beaver Dam Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon by the Pastor, Rev. W.B. Denson, assisted by Rev. Beecher L. Rhodes of Berkeley Avenue Baptist Church, Norfolk. The Beaver Dam choir sang "Jesus, Lover of My Soul," and "Abide with Me," and Miss Blanche Daughtrey of the choir sang "Saved by Grace." The pallbearers were: John F. Duke, Jasper Daughtrey, W.W. Winborne, Fayette Rawls, Walter L. Bryant, John O. Scott, Claude J. Edwards, and Herbert Corey. Burial was made in the family plot in the church cemetery. In attendance at the funeral was a large company of old friends and neighbors of the community, besides many friends from Norfolk, Portsmouth and Franklin.
