JOSEPH A. SCOTT 

JOSEPH A. SCOTT, 80, BURIED ON MONDAY 

  Funeral services for Joseph A. Scott, aged 80,who died at his home in 
Bethany community, near Smithfield, Sunday noon were held at Bethany M.E. 
Church Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock interment being in the church cemetery.

  Mr. Scott was a prominent and well beloved citizen of the entire county 
and was engaged actively in up-building Bethany church for many years. He 
served as Sunday school superintendent for over thirty years and taught a 
Bible class throughout his church career.

  Services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. E.W. Sommerville, of Smithfield. 
Several appropriate songs were rendered by the Smithfield Baptist Church choir.

  He is survived by his wife Rebecca Frances Scott, two brothers, Ned Scott of 
Uzzell's Church community and Albert Scott of Richmond; four daughters, Mrs. 
James L. Gwaltney, Mrs. Martin L. Gwaltney, Mrs. Ivan H. Gwaltney and Mrs. 
J.A. Thacker; three sons, R.M. and Richard A. Scott, all of this county and 
Ray C. Scott of Norfolk. Twenty-five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren 
also survive.

  Active pallbearers were Woodard Scott, Ryland Scott, K.L. Gwaltney, Horace 
Gwaltney, Stanley Scott and Linwood Scott.

  Honorary pallbearers were: J.I. Gwaltney, M.L. Gwaltney, I.H. Gwaltney, Ira 
Gwaltney, Nanie B. Gwaltney, H.O. Gwaltney, J.A. Thacker, J.R. Thacker, C.H. 
Thacker, L.C. Thacker, A.J. Edwards, O.B. Edwards, J.H. Edwards, T.E. Edwards, 
J.D. Edwards, Franklin Edwards, James West, Lankford West, Lawson Carr, Taylor 
Darden, J.W. Cofer, J.M. McGorman, J.E. Ellis, Hyden Ramsey, L.H. Delk, Carson 
Delk, M.W. Jones, Decator Edwards, George Harverty, Seldon Haverty, P.H. 
Haverty, J.M. Outland, W.C. Scott, Joe Jones and James Dashields.
