All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ CARR STEPHENSON VIRGINIA-CAROLINA NEWS [...] MANAGER OF MILL AT MYRTLE KILLED Carr Stephens [sic; Stephenson] Meets Death When Coat Entangles In Machinery Myrtle, Oct. 20. - Carr Stephens, 65, manager of the Myrtle Supply Corporation's grist mill here, was killed when caught in the shafting of the mill while adjusting a belt this morning. Mr. Stephens had been in charge of the plant for about six months. His coat became entangled in the belt, throwing him around the shaft, inflicting injuries which caused almost instant death. A coroner's jury was empaneled, consisting of Bunyan Archer, acting coroner; Paul J. Powell, John B. Matthews, John H. Powell, R.E. Holland, J.N. Eure, S.T. Kittrell, who viewed the body and brought in a verdict of accidental death. Mr. Stephens is survived by his granddaughter, Mrs. Linwood Bradshaw, of Myrtle; a sister residing at Newsoms; and two daughters, Mrs. H.E. Underwood of Newsoms, and Mrs. Walter Johnson, of Nansemond County. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at Mount Carmel Christian Church, by the pastor.
