Stevens, prominent citizen of Isle of Wight County, who died at his home in Rushmere on Saturday morning, August 10, were conducted at Bay View M.E. Church Monday afternoon, August 12 at 3:30 o'clock. The Rev. E.E. Henley, pastor of the church, conducted the service, assisted by the Rev. E.W. Somerville and the choir sang two hymns favorites of Mr. Stevens "Must Jesus Bear the Cross Alone: and "Sage in the Arms of Jesus." Miss Virginia Wells and Mrs. Littleton Wilson sang as a duet "God Will Take Care of You." Mrs. E.E. Henly was accompanist. The casket was covered with a spray of lilies and red rose and there were many beautiful floral tributes from Mr. Stevens many friends. After the service at the church, final rites were said at the grave in Ivy Hill Cemetery. Surviving Mr. Stevens are his wife, Mrs. Julia O. Stevens; three daughters, Mrs. V.A. Richardson, and Mrs. L.W. Savedge of Smithfield; and Ms. C.E. Jones, of Rushmere; a son, Mr. W.A. Stevens, of Scotland, Surry County; fourteen grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. W.F. Rife and Mrs. H.W. Crocker of Rushmere and several nieces and nephews. Honorary pallbearers were close relatives of the deceased and active pallbearers were Jake Thomas, William Hunnicut, Grover Turner, Edmond Jones, James Jones and James Savedge.
