Mr. Shanks, a Norton native, retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a member of the George F. Dashiell American Legion No. 49. Survivors include his wife, Doris Shanks; two daughters, Brenda S. Grigsby and Pamela E. Shanks, both of Smithfield; three sons, James H. Shanks of New York City, Michael G. Shanks of New York City, Michael G. Shanks of Sequel, Calif., and Christopher D. Shanks; two sisters, Margaret S. Ellis and Shirley Graves, both of Alcoa, Tenn.; three brothers, Paul Shanks and Russell Shanks, both of Los Angeles and Larry Shanks of Tampa, Fla.; and one grandchild. The funeral was conducted Wednesday in Colonial Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. William A. Amon. Burial was in Saint Luke’s Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
