Train In Some Mysterious Manner, Succumbs At Hospital Clarence Saunders, of Windsor, who was rushed to the Virginia Hospital early yesterday morning in a serious condition as a result of injuries received when he is supposed to have been struck by a N. & W. train, died that afternoon at about 4 o'clock. Saunders received a fractured skull and the right leg was severed and his body in general was terribly mangled. He was found by a section foreman and rushed immediately to this city. It was learned that Saunders left Zuni Monday night at about 10:45 to walk to his home about five miles distant. Doctors of this city deemed an inquest unnecessary and his body was shipped back to Windsor from this city this morning. Mr. Saunders was a son of the late C.E. Saunders and Mrs. Whittie Saunders, of Windsor. Besides his mother he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. A.W. Butler, of Norfolk, Mrs. A.J. Griffin, of Windsor, three brothers, C.F. Saunders, of Virginia Beach, C.R. Saunders, of Zuni, and J.N. Saunders of Norfolk. Funeral services will be held at Antioch Christian Church Thursday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock by the Rev. George A. Pearce, assisted by the Rev. W.D. Harvard. Clarence Edward Saunders, 30, of Windsor, found unconscious on the Norfolk and Western railway tracks early Tuesday, suffering from a fracture of the skull and with his right leg cut off below the knee, died yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock in Virginia hospital, Suffolk, after an operation. The injured man was found by a railroad section foreman, and was carried to Suffolk on an early morning freight. It was learned that he left Zuni Tuesday night about 10:45 o'clock, walking on his way to his home, five miles distant. It was indicated that he had been struck by a train, but doctors who examined him expressed puzzlement over the fact that his torso bore no injuries. An inquest over the body will be held in Suffolk today. Mr. Saunders was a son of the late C. E. Saunders and Mrs. Whittie Saunders of Windsor. Besides his mother, he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. W.H. Butler of Norfolk, and Mrs. A.J. Griffin, of Windsor; and three brothers, C.F. Saunders, of Virginia Beach, C.R. Saunders, of Zuni, and J.N. Saunders, of Norfolk. He was a member of Blackwater Lodge 134, A.F. & A.M., and Zion Tent 42, Maccabees, both of Zuni, and Antioch Christian Church. Funeral services will he conducted at Antioch Christian Church this Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by the Rev. George A. Pearce, pastor, and the Rev. W.D. Harwood, D.D., pastor of Mt. Carmel Christian Church, and burial will be in Antioch cemetery, with Masonic rites.
