Mrs. Seward was a native of Southampton County. She was a retired Suffolk High School teacher with 33 years of service. She was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy, where she retired as Lt. Commander and served in World War II. She was a member of Smithfield Baptist Church. Other memberships include: Co-founder and sponsor of the Suffolk Civic Chorus; Co-founder and past president of Suffolk Art Club; member of the Association for Preservation of Virginia Antiquities; past member of American Association of University Women; charter member of University of Virginia Chapter of Chi Omega; member of the Woman's Club of Smithfield; past member of Suffolk Business & Professional Women; member of American Legion George F. Dashiell Post #49; founder and past president of Isle of Wight Society; past member of Archeological Society of Virginia; organized the Young Women's Sunday School Class at Smithfield Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Women's Missionary Union. Mrs. Seward was the daughter of the late Christanna Hall and William Monroe Beale. Survivors include three nieces, Sara B. Williams of Suffolk, Evelyn B. Dressier of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and Anne B. Scott of Portsmouth; three nephews, Thomas Beale and William Beale of Maryland, and Carl M. Beale Jr. of Smithfield. Graveside services were held Monday, July 23, at 10 a.m. in Central Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Warren F. Taylor officiating.
