VAUGHAN DIES FROM EFFECTS OF ACCIDENTAL SHOT George W. Vaughan of the Franklin community, who was accidentally shot by his six-year-old son, Ray, last Friday morning, died the same afternoon at five o’clock in Lakeview Hospital, Suffolk, where he was taken in the hope of saving his life. Nothing has so distresses this community as the tragic death of Mr. Vaughan, who was held in high esteem by everyone and was a successful farmer, a substantial citizen and one of the outstanding members of Beaver Dam Baptist Church where he was a member of the board of deacons and was always active and interested in its welfare and progress. Mr. Vaughan and his little son, who was his constant companion, had been to Franklin last Friday morning and had stopped at the Crossroads Service Station about two miles from here on their way home. While Mr. Vaughan was talking with friends, the little boy found a pistol in a box behind the counter in the station and playfully pointing it at his father, the weapon went off piercing Mr. Vaughan in the abdomen and puncturing an artery. He was immediately taken to his home on the Franklin-Windsor road near Walters, where it is said he told his wife, "Ray did it, but he didn’t mean to and did not know any better." He was attended by Dr. R.H. Cobb and Dr. C.J. Bradshaw of Carrsville, and was later taken to the hospital. The body was brought from Lakeview and prepared for burial by W.J.M. Holland and Sons of this town. Funeral services were held from Beaver Dam Church Sunday afternoon in the presence of one of the largest crowds ever seen at that church. The Pastor, Rev. W.B. Denson, was assisted in the funeral rites by Rev. G.R. Pankey, a former pastor at Beaver Dam. Special musical numbers, favorite hymns of Mr. Vaughan’s were given by the choir and there was a profusion of beautiful floral offerings. Interment was made in the churchyard cemetery and the body bearers were: J. Lam Harcum, Lafayette Rawls, Walter L. Bryant, A.R. Butler, R.D. Brett, C.H. Hayes, W.M. Bradshaw and Clinton Bradshaw. The honorary pallbearers were selected from a large number of friends of the family. Mr. Vaughan is survived by his widow, who is a daughter of the late John R. Rose of Isle of Wight County, and by nine sons, R.B. Vaughan and J.V. Vaughan of Newport News, William W. Clyde, Reggie, Geo. W. Jr., Garland, Robert and Ray Vaughan of Isle of Wight; three sisters, Mrs. J.R. Lankford of Franklin, Mrs. Jack Saunders of Zuni and Mrs. Lee Fowler of Walters, besides many other relatives and a wide circle of sorrowing friends.
