Whitehead Sheriff Of I-W Buried Dec. 21st William Colgate Whitehead, Isle of Wight County sheriff, died at his home in Smithfield Monday, December 19, 1955, following an illness of several months. He was a lifelong resident of Smithfield and a member of Christ Episcopal Church. Mr. Whitehead had been sheriff of Isle of Wight County for 28 years, and was to retire from office January 1. He was a member of the National Sheriffs' Association, the Smithfield Union Lodge No. 18, A.F. & A.M., the Smithfield Royal Arch Chapter No. 67, and of the George F. Dashiell Post 49, American Legion. He was a veteran of World War I. A son of the late Arthur R. and Virginia Cowper Whitehead, he is survived by his widow, Mrs. Neva Whiteside Whitehead; a daughter, Mrs. Ferdinand Lewis Salomon of Charlottesville, and two nephews, John D. Whitehead, Orlando, Fla., and Richard C. Whitehead of Springfield, Va. Funeral services were conducted at St. Luke's Memorial Cemetery, Benns Church, Wednesday at 2 P.M. by the Rev. E.H. Forster, rector of Christ Episcopal Church, and the Rev. William Brayshaw, former rector, and the Rev. G.W.M. Taylor, pastor of Trinity Methodist Church. Masonic rites were conducted at the grave. The funeral procession left the Bullock Funeral Home at 1:45 P.M. Friends were asked to omit flowers. [photo, captioned:] Jesse J. Scott Photo Copy W. C.
