He was a lifelong resident of Isle of Wight County and was the son of the late Garland Seward Whitley and Joan Hamlett Whitley. He was predeceased by his son, Ryan C. Whitley. He worked as a pipefitter for Newport News Shipbuilding for 30 years prior to which he was a farmer. Gerald enjoyed farming, fishing, hunting, and golfing. He was also an avid New York Yankees and North Carolina Tarheels fan. Gerald is survived by his sons, Reed C. Whitley and Russ C. Whitley and wife, Destiney; children's mother, Sandra W. Robinson; sister, Glenda Topping; brother, Michael Whitley. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, at Antioch Church Cemetery with the Rev. Basil Ballard officiating. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday night at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory for a time of visitation. Memorial donations may be made to the family.
