He was a native of Isle of Wight County and owned and operated the Gulf Service Station in Windsor. He was a member of Woodland Methodist Church. He was the husband of Mrs. Effie Braswell Whitley and son of Wesley and Mrs. Maude Griffin Whitley of Isle of Wight. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Stephen James Whitley of Smithield, and Garland Seward Whitey of Windsor; four brothers, Jack W. Whitley of Suffolk; Alton Whitley, Smithfield; Robert Whitley, Windsor; William Whitley, Kinston, N.C.; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will beheld at 2 p.m. Wednesday in I.O. Hill and Co. Funeral Home conducted by Dr. R.E. Brittle and the Rev. Richard T. Squires.
