Born in Edgecombe County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Elsie Rose and Jesse Clinton Hamlett. She had retired as a home healthcare aide and was a member of First Baptist Church in Norfolk. She was preceded in death by her husband, Garland Seward Whitley; brothers, Lynn T. and Jesse C. Hamlett Jr.; sisters, Nellie Carroll and Patricia Phillips; and one grandson, Ryan Whitley. Mrs. Whitley is survived by her daughter, Glenda W. Topping of Courtland; two sons, Gerald C. Whitley of Windsor and G. Michael Whitley of Smithfield; sister, Helen Asuelo of Santa Rosa, Calif.; six grandsons, and a host of nieces, nephews and special friends. Graveside funeral services were held August 4, at Antioch Congregational Christian Church Cemetery, Windsor, with the Rev. Jim Kerr officiating. Condolences may be posted at www.jtmorriss.com.
