WELLS [sic; WILLS] Suffolk, Jan. 12. - John E. Wells, 73, prominent citizen of Nansemond County and Confederate veteran, died this afternoon at the home of his nephew, R.W. Pruden, near Windsor, Va. Relatives who survive are R.W. Pruden, of Windsor; L.D. Pruden, J.B. Pruden, P.D. Pruden of Suffolk, Mrs. P.D. Snipes, of Raleigh, N.C., and Mrs. R.G. Edgerton, of Suffolk. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, at Woodland Church with burial in the church cemetery. ****************************************************************************** FUNERAL OF MR. WILLS Suffolk, Jan. 13. - The funeral services of John E. Wells, Confederate veteran, who died at the home of his nephew, R.W. Pruden, near Windsor, Va., will be held Monday afternoon at 2 p.m., at Woodland Church, with burial in the church cemetery. ****************************************************************************** JOHN WILLS Suffolk, Jan. 14. - Funeral services for John E. Wills, Confederate veteran and aged citizen, were held this afternoon at Woodland M.E. Church, Isle of Wight County, conducted by the Methodist pastor. The pallbearers were: T.D. Mathews, J.W. Pitt, T.J. Saunders, Walter E. Godwin, W.G. Saunders, James Key, D.E. Edwards, R.L. Hooker. James Solomon TURNER (b. ca. 1811, Southampton Co.), son of Solomon & Sally, 21 May 1868 in Isle of Wight Co. Find a Grave Memorial #106035215 gives Ellen T. WILLS, d. 7 Aug 1908, but her obit ("Richmond Times-Dispatch," Aug. 9, 1908, p. 2) gives d. 8 Aug 1908. The daughter of Thomas K. & Patsey PURDIE, she m. Lucien E.M. WILLS 17 Oct 1842 in Isle of Wight Co. Lucien d. 24 Apr 1866 in Isle of Wight Co. of typhoid pneumonia, age 48. (IoW.Co. D.Reg. '66 p. 118, #31) His nephew "Reggie" Reginald Wills PRUDEN (1874 - 1947) is also buried there. D.Cert. 1118 (Newport #1) gives b. 2 Feb 1846. The 1900 Census - Newport Dist., Isle of Wight Co. - gives b. May 1845. He is always enumerated in Isle of Wight Co. - never Nansemond Co. He served in Co. A, 19th Battalion VA Heavy Artillery. He applied for a pension 4 Jun 1923; Ancestry.com gives 1922. His sister Anna Cole (WILLS; Mrs. John Thomas Brooklyn) PRUDEN (1848 - 1922), Reggie's mother, is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk.
