All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ GERTRUDE CRISER WINBORNE SUFFOLK - Gertrude Criser Winborne, 92, of the 6500 block of Holland road, a retired educator, died Aug. 30, in a hospital. Mrs. Winborne, a native of Hot Springs, was the widow of Willie T. Winborne and a graduate of Farmville State Teacher College and the College of William and Mary. She was a principal and teacher at Carrsville High School, where she served for 43 years. She was instrumental in getting a new school built in the spring of 1924, which is now Carrsville Elementary School. After her retirement, the "beloved teacher" was often visited by her former students and in later years, some of these students and in later years, some of these students took her to various appointments. Winborne was a member of the Virginia Retired Teachers Association,, Kappa Gamma Sorority and was the oldest member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church. She was an honorary member of the Holland Women’s Club and Holland Cotillion. Survivors include a sister, Gretchen C. Harris of Franklin; and a nephew. The funeral was conducted Tuesday in Beaver Dam Baptist Church, Isle of Wight County, by the Rev. Richard L. Peerey. Burial was in the church cemetery. Wright Funeral Home handled the arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Carrsville PTA, c/o Carrsville Elementary School, Carrsville, 23315, for a trust for disadvantaged children. Mabel Gertrude (CRISER; Mrs. Willie T.)
