WRIGHT OF NEAR WINDSOR WAS BURIED ON FRIDAY Leighton Avner Wright, 64, member of an old Nansemond family, died Wednesday morning at 1 o'clock at his home near Windsor following a brief illness. He was the son of the late Cornelius W. and Octavia Saunders Wright, and is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lucy Pierce Wright, a daughter, Mrs. A.C. Moore, of Suffolk; two granddaughters, Misses Marjorie and Evelyn Moore of Suffolk; a sister Mrs. Frank K. Duncan of Baltimore; two brothers, Jesse H. Wright of Miami, Fla., and T.B. Wright, of Ocean View; five half sisters, Mrs. F.M. Brown, Mrs. Hazel Roberts, Mrs. Fred Baker, Mrs. Allie Schawn of Norfolk, and Miss Selma Wright, of Catawba; two half brothers, C. Wallace Wright and Percy T. Wright, of Suffolk; his stepmother, Mrs. Etta J. Wright of Suffolk. Mr. Wright was a member of Woodland Methodist Church of Corinthian Masonic Lodge of Norfolk; of Willie Lee Lodge, Knights of Pythias, of South Norfolk; and of Oakdale Lodge of Odd Fellows No. 70, South Norfolk. Funeral services were held at residence Friday at 2 p.m. Leighton Avner WRIGHT, farmer, Nansemond Co. native, d. 9 Feb 1944, at home, near Windsor, age 64, interred in Cedar Hill Cemetery (Block V, Plot 26*), Suffolk, 11 Feb 1944, "The Smithfield (VA) Times," Vol. 26, No. 47, Feb. 15, 1944 Additional information: *Cedar Hill list, an extension of the Southampton County Historical Society {SCHS} Cemetery Project: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/nansemond/cemeteries/cedar_v.txt His Find a Grave Memorial (#92442631) gives his middle name as "Algeon," though the included photo of his marker shows only his middle initial.
