Devised May 14, 1710, Probated August 23, 1714. I, John Carrell, of the Isle of Wight County in Virginia being at this time sick and weak in body but of sound and perfect disposing mind and memory and praise be given unto God, therefore do make, ordain, and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say, First and especially, I commend my soul unto God the father of Spirits and his son Jesus Christ my only Saviour and Redeemer, hoping and assuredly trusting through his merits to attain everlasting life and salvation, and that I shall be numbered amongst his chosen and elect, and my body I commit to the Earth to be decently buried after the manner of Christian burial at the discretion of my Executor hereafter named, and for what worldly estate it hath pleased God to possess me with, I give, bequeath, and dispose of in manner and form following. Item, I give and bequeath unto my loving son William Carrell my sword and carbine, an elm? chest, a cow with calf, a breeding sow, a pewter beaker, a feather bed and bolster, two pewter dishes, two plates, two porringers, one iron pot, one lock and to the elm chest, all of which he shall be possessed with at the age of one and twenty and not before. Item, I give and bequeath unto my loving son John Carrell a fowling piece, a small oak chest with a lock and key, a cow with calf, two pewter dishes, two pewter plates, two porringers, and one iron pot all which he shall be possessed with all at the age of twenty one years not before. Item, It is my will and desire that if my son William should die before the age of twenty-one, that the several things above bequeathed to him shall be and ____ to ____ and benefit solely of my son John Carrell, and if my son John dies before the age of twenty-one, then I give and bequeath the several things before given to my son John to my son William, and if any said sons William and John both die before twenty, then I give and bequeath the several things before named to be equally divided between my loving children hereafter named or the survivor of them. Item, I give and bequeath and it is my will and desire that all the residue and remainder of my goods and chattels, cattle, hogs, and household goods be equally divided between my loving and beloved wife Elizabeth and my loving children Thomas, Joseph, Benjamin, Samuel, and my daughter Elizabeth Carrell, that is to say, each of them an equal part or share ____ share or part they shall [have], that is to say, my children be possessed with when they severally shall come to the age of twenty-one as aforesaid not before except my daughter Elizabeth, who shall receive her part at the age of eighteen or married, whichever shall first happen, making and ordaining my loving and beloved wife Elizabeth my whole and sole Executrix of this my last will and testament wholy revoking and renouncing all former wills by me made or spoken and ____ _____. In testimony whereof I the said John Carrell have hereunto set my hand and seal this 14th day of May 1710. The last will and testament of John Carrell was presented in court by Elizabeth his widow and executrix, who made oath thereto and being proved in court by the oaths of John Whettstone and Thomas Carrell, two of the witnesses, is admitted [to] Record.
