Isle of Wight County, VA - Wills - Will of Anthony HOLLADAY January 3, 1718 ************* Isle of Wight, VA Will Book 2 Page 644 In the name of God Amen I Anthony Holladay of Isle of Wight County being weak in body but of good and perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God therefore and knowing of mortality of my body and being desirous to settle things in order do therefore and thereby make this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say first and principally I do commend my soul unto Almighty God my heavenly hoping that I shall be saved by the merits of my blessed Savior Jesus Christ and my body to the earth from whence it came to be buried in a Christian and decent manner at the discretion of my exec. hereafter named and as touching such worldly [ ] as the Lord in mercy has bestowed upon me in this life I do hereby give and dispose of the same in the following manner and form. I give and bequeath unto my son, Jonas Holladay, my great silver tankard, my pistols and holster and sword and suit of curtains and vallins of damask and counterpaine. Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah Murphrey my negro woman called Judoo and her future increase to her and her heirs forever. Item I give and bequeath to my son-in-law James Knott and Mary his now wife my negro woman called Hannah with her future increase and to them and their heirs forever also I give and bequeath my two negro girls one called Gissino and the other called Venus unto my son-in-law James Knott and Mary his now wife together with their increase to them and their heirs forever. Item I give and bequeath unto my granddaughter Elizabeth Holladay feather bed and bolster a pair of Holland sheets and a pair of course sheets a rug and blanket to be delivered at her day of marriage. I give and bequeath unto my grandson Joseph Holladay one half of the land I bought of Brother Marshall being about five hundred acres be it more or less to him and his heirs of his body lawfully begotten forever. Item I give and bequeath unto my grandson Anthony Coventry Holladay, son of my son, Samuel Holladay, deceased, the remaining part of my land bought of Brother Marshall being the other thereof to him and his heirs of his body lawfully begotten forever. Item I give and bequeath unto my grandson Anthony Coventry Holladay, son of my son Samuel Holladay, deceased, the land which I bought of James Valentine and Thomas Brewer being one hundred and thirty acres when he comes of lawful age and to the heirs of his body lawfully begotten forever together with all the stock of cattle, sheep, hogs and horses and four negroes, namely Cesar, Poll, Luke, Tim and their future increase to him and his heirs of his body lawfully begotten forever. I give and bequeath unto my granddaughter Catherine Murphrey one feather bed and furniture to be delivered at her day of marriage. Item it is my desire that the four negroes namely Cesar, Poll, Luke and Tim may remain upon the plantation given to my grandson namely Anthony Covonton Holladay. Item I give and bequeath unto my grandchildren namely the children of my son Samuel Holladay, deceased, and the children of my son Joseph Holladay, deceased, and the children of my daughter Sarah Murphrey, the remainder of my personal estate [ ] disposed of [ ] my son namely Jonas Holladay and my daughter Mary Knott, they are to have their equal parts in the personal estate given in this paragraph to my grandchildren living to be divided into five parts only my wearing aparell which I devise next. Item I give and bequeath all my wearing apparell, woolen and linen unto my son Jonas Holladay and my grandson Wm. Knott equally to be divided. Item and lastly I do hereby nominate and appoint my son namely Jonas Holladay and my grandson namely Anthony Covonton Holladay to be executors of this my last will and testament and that the house and negroes and plantation [or] remain in the hands of my son Jonas Holladay until my grandson Anthony comes to age.
