Isle of Wight County, VA - Wills - Will of Joseph HOLLADAY February 5, 1827 ************* Isle of Wight, VA Will Book 17 Page 424 In the name of God amen, I Joseph Holladay of the county of Isle of Wight, being of a sound and disposing mind and memory, do make this my last will and Testament in the following manner, To- wit - first- I lend the reasonable use and profit of all my estate lands, negroes, and stock unto my wife Polly during her natural life and enjoin on her, to keep the children and School the young ones as much as she shall be able to do, with the exception of the land purchased of Nath'l. Young and wife which lands I lend unto my said wife for the term of Five years and at the expiration of five years I give the said lands unto my sons Joseph and William Holladay to them and their heirs forever. Secondly I give unto my Daughter Martha Anne my negro man, Moses, and woman Lucy and her children to be delivered unto her when she shall be married to her and her heirs forever. Thirdly I give unto my daughter Mary Francis after the death of my Wife my negro Dick and woman Poll and her children Holland and Andrew together with her increase to her and her heirs forever. Fourthly I give unto my sons John and Thomas after my wife's death the land whereon I now live to them, or the survivor of them ( in case either should die without issue) and their heirs forever, also I give unto John my negro man Jack (in lieu of a boy Moses given to him by his uncle John) and I give to Thomas a boy Ned to him forever. Fifthly, it is my desire that after the death of my wife that the chattel property except the beds be sold, and out of the proceeds of the sale pay to my Son Joseph Two hundred dollars (in lieu of the legacy left him by his uncle) and the balance to be equally divided among all my children, or the survivors of them. I nominate name and appoint my wife my whole and Sole Executrix of this my last will and Testament, and being not involved in debt and having perfect confidence in my Executrix, request the court to require not security whatsoever. The foregoing Will was presented in Court, and proved by the oaths of Robert Lawrence and Joseph Goodwin the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. And on motion of the Exectrix who made oath thereto according to who entered into and acknowledged [ ] bond in the penalty of Ten thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs.
