Will of John Lawrence, 1738 - Isle of Wight County, VA Isle of Wight Co., VA, Wills and Accounts Vol. 4 (1733-1745), pp. 226-27 abstracted by Matt HARRIS [brackets & surname capitalization mine] [p] 226 In the Name of God Amen I John LAWRENCE of the County of Isle of Wight and Parish of Newport, being Sick and weak of body but of perfect mind and Memory Thanks be to God for the same, and Calling to mind the Uncertainty of this Transitory life do make this my Will & Testament, in manner and form as followeth, Imprimis I commend my Soul to Almighty God, and my body to the Earth to be Decently buried According to the Descretion of my Executors hereafter named. Item, I give to my Son William LAWRENCE to him and his heirs for Ever Item, I give and bequeath unto my Son William LAWRENCE the Plantation whereon I now live and all the Land belonging to it to the line of Mark Trees before Mentioned to him and his heirs for Ever Only my loving Wife to have the Use of the Dwelling House and the rest of the Old houses on the said plantation and a part of the Orchard and what Timber She'l have Occation to make Use of on the said plantation and as so much Land as She can make Use of During her Natural life and after her Death to be my Son William LAWRENCE as afore Mentioned- Item, I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Margreat LAWRENCE One feather Bedd & Boulster, One Rugg One Blanket One pair of Sheates One Chest One pott Two Cows and Calves to her and her heirs- Item, I give and bequeath Unto my Daughter Preselah LAWRENCE One feather Bedd & Boulster One Rugg One Blanket One pair of Sheates One pott One Chest Two Cows and Calves to her and her heirs- Item I give and bequeath Unto my Two sons John & William LAWRENCE my Still to them and their heirs- Item It is my will and Desire that my Two Daughters Margreat & Preselah live on my plantation during the time of their living Single and no longer- Item I give to my Son William LAWRENCE One feather Bedd & Boulster One Rugg One Blanket One pair of Sheates One pott One Chest one Seder Table and one half of the Chairs in the house and the Other half to my Wife I give my Son William Two Guns and One Negro called Ned and One Large brass Kittle Only my wife to have the Use of the sd Negro & Kittle during her Natural life and my Two Daughters Margreat & Preselah to have the Use of the said Negro and Kittle During the time of their living Single and no longer my son William havinh Now possession of the afore Mentioned Bed Boulster Rugg Blanket Sheats and Chest- Item I give to my Son in Law Rob.t CARR five Shillings Sterling in full of his Wife's part of my Estate She having Already received her part- Item I give to my Daughter Sarah MOORE five Shillings Sterling in full of her part of my Estate She having Already received her part- Item I give all my Pewter to my Wife and son William and Three Daughters Viz Margreat Elizabeth & Preselah to be Equally Divided among them- [p] 227 Item I give all the rest of my Cattle to be Equally Divided between my Wife and Son William- Item I give all my Hoggs wheresoever they be to my Wife- Item I give to my Daughter Preselah my Negro Wench Doll- Item I give to my Duaghter Margreat my Negro Girl Jeney- Item I give to my Daughter Eliz:a my Negro boy Tom but my Will is that my Wife have the Use of the said Negros During her natural life- Item I give and bequeath Unto my Son John LAWRENCE five Shillings Sterling if [in] full of full of his part of my Estate- Item I give to my Daughter Eliz:a five Shillings Sterling in full for her part of my Estate- Item I give Unto my loving Wife all the rest of my Estate of what Nature so Ever After my Just Debts and funerall Expenses paid; to her and her heirs, and lasly I do Appoint my said Wife and Son William to be my Whole & Sole Executors of this my last Will and Testam.t Making all Other Wills Void As Witness my hand and Seal this 27:th day of Jan:ry 1738 The Mark of I John LAWRENCE *Seal* The words have, and Interlined before Signed} Signed Seald & Delivered in presence of US } Robert LAWRENCE Charles COUNSELL Tho:s BREWER At a Court held for Isle of Wight County April the 23:d 1739- The last Will & Testament of John LAWRENCE dece'd was presented in Court by Margaret LAWRANCE & William LAWRANCE the Executors therein named who made Oath thereto According to Law and being proved by the Oaths of Rob:t LAWRANCE & Charles COUNSIL two of the Witnesses thereto is Admitted to Record.
