KING GEORGE COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Hooe Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The Hooe cemetery: 1937 Aug. 10 Research made by Julia Marie Heflin Cemetery Location: 1.6 miles northeast of King George, Virginia on Route #3; thence 8.5 miles northwest on Route #206; thence 1.9 miles north of Owens, Virginia on Route #624; thence .9 mile east of Hooes, Virginia on Route #613; thence north on Route #614 and this cemetery is on the south side of the road. King George County, Virginia DATE: Oldest grave April 18, 1766. Monument erected in 1852. OWNERS: (blank) DESCRIPTION: This cemetery is located on the Barnsfield estate, near the Potomac River, in the middle of a field between the Potomac River and Route #614. This is a large cemetery with much undergrowth in it. There is one large monument erected to the family of the Hooes, containing the family record for six generations. There are two large stones broken off and several small stones with the initials of the person on them and one large slab erected on a brick foundation, but the inscriptions cannot be read. On this monument are inscribed the names of all who are supposed to have been buried in the yard, and this numbers correspond to those on the marker of each grave. A Braddick Ambroses friend and wife, children follow numeral called with both parents or the mothers. Six generations rest here. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The following inscriptions were copied from the large monument: To the memory and in honor of an ancestry who have from its first acquisition owned, lived upon and handed down this estate in direct descent to the present proprietor, Dr. Abram Barnes Hooe, by who this monument is erected, November 2, A.D. 1852. Colonel Hooe settled here from the lower Virginia, before or about the beginning of the 18th century and after marriage built in 1715, younder house now standing and the farm is called Barnsfield, November 2, A.D. 1852. ----------------- Large slab on a brick foundation: Here lies the body of Captain John Hooe, son of Colonel Rice Hooe and Frances his wife, daughter of Robert _____ who was born the 1 day of May ____ and departed this life on the 1 day of April ____ in the 62 year of age. Erected to the memory of ____ _____ daughter of Major Robert William Hooe. Large stone broken off: To our beloved Dr. Abram Barnes Hooe, born December 5, 1805, died November 8, 1867. And I heard a voice from Heaven saying, unto me, write, blessed are the dead which die in the Load, henceforth saith the scripture, that they may rest from their labor and their work do follow them. Large stone broken off: Has a picture of an angel weeping. To the memory of Lucy Fitzhugh Hooe, born July 20, at Monchein, the home of her parents, George Nicholas Grymes, who was E.E. Minor of Gunston in Fairfax, married 29 March, 1808, in St. Paul’s Church by Bishop Goodrick and died 21 of April 1852 at Barnsfield her home in King George county, Virginia. She died as she had lived, firm in the faith of the everlasting Gospel. Her last words of comfort, never mind, my husband, it is the Lord’s will. He dying testimony, “I am not afraid to die, I have not a sin to fear.” Her praise no words of man can tell of her inspirations and her children arise up and call her blessed, her husband also and he praiseth her many daughter have done virturous by, but this one excellest them all. “Favour is deceiptful and beauty is vane, but a woman that feareth the Lord she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands and let her own words praise her in the gate.” Proverb 31: 28-31.
