King George Co., VA - Miscellaneous Wills John Taliaferro will 1836/1853 King George Co., Virginia I John Taliaferro, of Hagley, in the County of King George, do make and subscribe this writing, as and for my last will and testament, so to be considered without regard to form. I leave to my son-in-law, James G. Taliaferro Junr. all the estate real personal or mixed of which I may be possessed or which I may in any manner be entitled, at the time of my death - Interest and to be applied by him to the following uses, and purposes - First, he is, out of my estate, to be disposed of for that purpose at his discretion to pay all my debts. Secondly, he is, after the payment of my debts, to devolve the residue of my estate, in such manner as he may deem most beneficial to the use of my beloved daughter E. A. S. Taliaferro, his wife, and her children. And at her death, whatever may remain of my estate in the hands of the said James G. Taliaferro Jr., or his Extrs., Admins, or Assigns, shall be equally divided amongst the children of my daughter aforesaid. My Body, if not attended with too much trouble, I desire to be placed beside my beloved wife. My Immortal spirit may, I trust go, thro the merits of my blessed Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ, to my merciful father in Heaven, who gave it existence. I ask my son-in-law, to execute the above trust - And in the performance of it my desire is that no security shall be requested of him, by the Court, or by any other person. - In testimony that this is my will, I subscribe my name & affix my seal the 8th day of November in the year 1836. John Taliaferro and his wife Lucy Thornton Hooe had two children: John Seymour Taliaferro (1798-1832) and Elizabeth Anne Seymour Taliaferro (ca. 1880-1854). ****************************************** James G. My son, John having already received of me Negroes and money largely more than his fair share of my estate say twenty thousand dollars worth, I give him no more. My second son Wm. Taliaferro deceased had long since received the following Negroes, viz: Cezar, Lucy, and Luara, Essex, Abram, Muley and three children, therefore I have him no more. My third son Jas. G. Taliaferro I give and bequeath my Oakland Estate with the following named slaves George, Kiky, Fanny, and Jim and no more. To my fourth son Lawrence I give the tract of land called Stuarts near the Court House containing three hundred and forty acres to him and his heirs forever and to James the Oakland estate to him and his heirs forever. To my son Jas. M. Taliaferro I give the land called Kildee containing three hundred and twenty acres with the following Slaves Viz. Solomon, Baby, Milly and her two children, Alsey and her five children, Nelson, John, Cora, Mary and her two children and all the future increase of the above named women to him the sd. Jas. M. Taliaferro and his heirs forever. My wish is that Phill Dishman, Phill Allen, Tom Bellon, Phillis and her eight children, Nancy and five children, be equally divided between my two sons Jas. G. Taliaferro and Jas. M. Taliaferro share and share alike. It is my will and desire that my Servant woman Rosetta be manumitted together with her two children Morris and Thornton and lastly I appoint my three sons Jas. G. I give to Sally and her children $200.00, 2 mules or horses, a yoke of oxen, milk cow, two beds and furniture including all blankets, all meat on hand, 20 barrels of corn and that my executor have her and her children and increase emancipated...The existence of a cruel law of this state may render it necessary to seek for those unfortunates some more friendly quarter... To Benjamin Franklin (son of Sally), $500.00, 1 Negro, 1 mule or horse. He is to have no part of what is devised to his mother and other children... The residue of my estate to Nappertandy, a child living with my overseer and whom I recognize as my child by Ann Truston. To my Friend, Mrs. Sally Rogers (wife of overseer) $50.00 in gratitude for taking care of this child.
