TOM PEETE CROSS DR. T.P. CROSS AGED 72, DIES AT AYLETT HE WAS AN AUTHORITY ON MEDIEVAL IRISH LORE Aylett, Va., Dec. 25 - Dr. Tom Peete Cross, world-famous authority of medieval Irish culture and the legends of King Authur, died Tuesday at his home, "Warsaw" at Aylett, King William County. He was 72. Dr. Cross had lived in Aylett since his retirement in 1945 from his position as professor of English and comparative literature at the University of Chicago. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. David’s Church in Aylett, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Weathers Cross; two daughters, Mrs. Storm Bull, of Boulder, Colo, and Mrs. Louis S. Baer, of Burlingame, Calif., and a brother, Dr. Hardy Cross, professor at Yale University, New Haven, Conn. LONG TEACHING CAREER Born at "Farmer’s Delight Plantation" in Nansemond County, Dr. Cross attended Norfolk Academy and Hampden-Sydney College, which awarded him three degrees. He received M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University, the latter in 1909, and in the same year journeyed to Dublin for study at the School of Irish Learning. In 1910, he became an instructor at Harvard University and Radcliff College. The next year he was named professor and head of the department of English at Sweetbriar College. In 1912, he was made professor of English at the University of North Carolina. In 1913, he became associate professor of English and Celtic at the University of Chicago, and in 1929 was made professor of English and comparative literature. While at the University of Chicago, he accepted visiting professorships at Stanford University, Harvard, the University of California and Colorado University. He retired in 1945 with the rank of professor emeritus. He was the author of numerous papers and books in the field of medieval literature, and a member of a number of scholarly societies.
