WILLIAM EYL [sic]
Of Virginia

    William Ely applied for revolutionary pension while living in Lee County,
Virginia, March 31, 1819. He was born March 25, 1753. He does not give the place
of his birth in his application papers. He enlisted in Bedford County, Virginia,
February 15, 1799, and served as a private in Captains Woodson and Lawson's
companies, Colonel Abraham Buford's Virginia regiment. He was in the battle
called Buford's Defeat, where he received a saber wound in the head and shoulder
and where he was taken prisoner. He was released on parole in a few days. In
1820 he makes reference to his wife but does not give her name and refers to his
son, John, afe [sic] about eighteen years.
