He was born March 25, 1753. He does not give the place of his birth in his application papers. He enlisted in Bedford County, Virginia, February 15, 1799, and served as a private in Captains Woodson and Lawson's companies, Colonel Abraham Buford's Virginia regiment. He was in the battle called Buford's Defeat, where he received a saber wound in the head and shoulder and where he was taken prisoner. He was released on parole in a few days. In 1820 he makes reference to his wife but does not give her name and refers to his son, John, afe [sic] about eighteen years.
