He was graduated from the U.S. Military academy in 1837 and was appointed 2d lieutenant of dragoons. He was promoted 1st lieutenanty in 1842; coptain Oct 6, 1846, and assigned to the 1st dragoons, and was brevetted major, Feb 23, 1847, for gallant and meritorious services where he bore Col. Jefferson Davis, who had been seriously wounded, from the field. He served through the Mexican war, 1846-'47, and was promoted major and paymaster, July 25, 1854. He resigned from the U.S. army, April 29, 1861, and was appointed lieutenant-colonel in the adjutant-general's department of the Confederate states army. He was promoted colonel, Oct. 13, 1862, and brigadier general, Oct 20, 1862, and was reappointed and confirmed brigadier-genreal, Dec 21, 1863. He was chief of the staff to Gen. Robert E. Lee, and inspector-general of the army of Northern Virginia. He resigned from the army in 1864 and engaged in business in Columbus Ga., where he died Feb 18, 1879.
