Serjeant-10th Virginia Regiment
Loudoun County

  Alexandria- March 5, 1787: This is to certify that this day I have seen W. 
Thomas Clarke and examined a wound on his arm which he tells me he received when 
a serjeant in the Virginia Continental Troops at the Battle of Brandywine which 
from judging circumstances by him was related (I firmly believe this to be true) 
and in consequence of said wound he hath lost the use of his left arm entirely, 
and that from the injury tore truely to the bone-the wound is still open and 
likely to be so for some time and to give him such pain as I have from  the 
occasion of examining it, extracted two pieces of ___ ___ and there is still

service always conducted in such a manner as to gain applause of the officers of 
the regt. in so much as he was appointed on of the first serj's and I verily 
believe had he not met with an accident that a commission would have been given 
him.  Given under my hand the above date.  Tho. West
