The submitter has given permission to the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. http://www.usgwarchives.net ******************************************************************************** Will of Landon Carter of Woodland signed 8 Dec 1857 found in Loudoun Co., VA ******** In the name of God, Amen, I Landon Carter of Wood Land and Loudoun County, Va. being of sound and disposing mind for which I thank my God, in order to prevent all misunderstanding and difference between my children and knowing the uncertainty of life, and ignorant of the time I may be cur off by death, do make this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all wills heretofore made by me in manner and form following Item 1st I wish and desire that all my just debts should be paid from the proceeds of the sale of my crowing crop. Item 2nd I give and bequeath to my Son Edward L. Carter and his heirs forever, my mansion house, with all its appurtenances and household and kitchen furniture and farming utensils together with three hundred and fifty acres of land more or less bounded as follows, beginning at a small walnut tree on the north side of Bull run, Corner to Woodland and Sudley farms, thence following the line between Woodland and Sudley to the Wilford corner, thence following the Dividing line between Woodland and Wilfords farm to Bullrun near the "White Rock", thence down Bullrun following the meanders thereof to the beginning. I also give to my said Son one third of all my stocks and the following slaves. viz. Sam, Simeon, Stephen, Adaline, and her two youngest children, Polly, Lydia and Jemmy, with the express proviso that, my said son E. L. Carter relinquish all right, and title to the Wilford tract, which I deeded to him some years ago. Item 3d. Having given to my son George H. Carter a large portion of my estate some years ago, my wish and desire is that, his widow Anna B. Carter should have the following slaves to her and her heirs forever, John, Nancy, and her daughter Franky and her son Ben, and two milch cows. Item 4th. I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter, Sarah C. Ball and to her heirs forever two hundred acres of land lying and being in Prince William County, Va. bounded as follows _ beginning at Mackells Corner on Bull run, thence up said run with its meanders to a corner to be established when the land is surveyed, thence to Dangerfield's line, thence following Cushing's and Donohoe's line to Catharpin run thence up said Run following the edge of the water and Mackall's line to the first corner on Bull run. I also give to my daughter Sarah C. Ball one half of the remainder of my stock after my son Edward L. Carter has taken out his, and the ballance of my stock I wish divided equally between my daughter Edmonia R. Chinn, and Cary Ann Lewis. Item 5th. I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Edmonia R. Chinn one half of the Wilford tract of land lying in the Counties of Prince William and Loudoun together with the following slaves Viz. Jack, Matilda, and her child Cassius and Louisa and her child Milly to her and her heirs forever. Item 6th I give and bequeath to my beloved daughter Cary Ann Lewis the other half of the Wilford tract of land, the same to be divided equally according to quality between her and her Sister E. R. Chinn together with the following Slaves, viz Eleanor and her seven children, Frankey, Jonathan, and old Por (?) to her and her heirs forever. Item 7th My Will and desire is that, whatever money may be owing me may be equally divided among my children. Item 8th Lastly I appoint Edward S. Carter and Benjamin T. Cline Executors of this my last will and testament and direct the Court not to ask security of them. Witness my hand and seal this 8th day of December 1857 Landon Carter (seal) Signed in presence of JB Grayson C. C. Cushing At a County Court held for the County of Loudoun at the Courthouse, thereof on Tuesday the 10th day _ of August 1858. A paper purporting to be the last will and testament of Landon Carter Deceased was presented to the Court proved by the oaths of j. B. Grayson and C. C. Cushing the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of Edmund S. Carter [sic] and Benjamin T. Chinn the executors therein named, who made thereto and entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of forty thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs, certificate is granted them for obtaining a probate thereof in due form, and the said bond is ordered to be recorded.
